All-NRL Starting Wallabies Side: This Backline In Particular, With a Bit Of Training, Would Be Lethal

It’s one of the more enjoyable thought experiments to do.

A few weeks a go we put together our All-All Blacks starting footy side.

So now that Scope is best mate with a few union boys, today, it’s the Aussie’s turn.

But we’ve flipped it, and picked our best Wallabies side made up entirely of NRL talent.

The backline in particular would be lethal!

Fullback – Tom Trbojevic

Given space on those kick returns and a broken defensive line? game over. Safe as under the high ball too.

Wing – Ryan Papenhuyzen

Damian McKenzie vibes. Speed, skill, and a genuine game breaker.

Wing – Josh Addo-Carr

Already in the last few years we’ve seen a coupe of Storm flyers jump across to union and kill it! Foxx would be no different – in fact probably better.

Centre – Latrell Mitchell

Here’s your ultimate attacking threat, right in the middle of the park with speed outside him and plenty of one-on-one opportunities to attack. Would jam blokes too.

Second Five – Cam Munster

Have to have the Pres in the backline somewhere, too good to leave out. Creative, solid defender and second kicking option.

First Five – Nathan Cleary

Rig more like a union 10 than a halfback to be honest. Solid, powerful runner, great kicking game and the ultimate conductor.

Halfback – Damien Cook

Quick around the park, snappy pass and you know if the ruck gets loose, he’s gone.

Number 8 – David Fifita

Best ball runner in the side. Imagine the big fella picking it up off the back of the scrum 10m out?!

Open-Side Flanker – Cam Murray

Proper fetcher, strong ball carrier and massive engine. Long body perfect for getting over the ball too.

Blind-Side Flanker – Angus Crichton

Played union before so easy fit. Big body, strong carry and tall enough to be your third line out option.

Lock – Shaun Lane

First guy picked really. Ultimate line-out target.

Lock – Regan Campbell-Gillard

Another big body in the middle, would bang bodies around at ruck time and happily take those tough carries.

Prop – Josh Papali’i

Run close to the ruck, I dare you.

Hooker – Harry Grant

Has to be in the side somewhere and could act as that link between backs and forwards. Would get through a ton of defensive work too.

Prop – Jake Trbojevic

Would do all the dirty work, and then some.

Who’d we miss?

  1. Should do some research. Damien Cook was a union winger as a schoolboy. Crichton played 8 and 12. Murray played 12. And pap was a fullback. All in all this team would get stopped by at least 60-70 points by any decent union side they wont win a scrum, lineout, ruck or maul, sounds great on paper though….
